Celebrate Black Austin, Where the History Happened
Join Black Austin Tours for Heritage Weekend, a celebration of Black history, culture, creativity, and community in the heart of East Austin.
On Saturday, October 24, we’re opening the gates to the historic property at 1914 East 12th Street, home of Ideal Barbershop since 1948 and part of a legacy of Black property ownership stretching back more than 120 years.
Heritage Weekend brings that history to life.
Throughout the day, the Backyard at 12th & Chicon will become a gathering place for generations of Austinites to experience the stories of the people, families, businesses, and communities that built Black Austin.
Expect an afternoon filled with music, art, storytelling, history, family activities, hands-on workshops, and community experiences, including:
Heritage & Family History Conversation — exploring East Austin family histories, Black property ownership, genealogy, and why preserving our stories matters
Interactive art and memory-making experiences inspired by family, place, and the stories we inherit
Where Y’all At Though?! (WYAT?!) bringing music, culture, and community to the Backyard
Stories from 12th & Chicon highlighting the people, businesses, barbershops, restaurants, and institutions that shaped this historic Black corridor
The Heritage Lounge, presented by E4 Youth
Black Austin Tours experiences, merchandise, vendors, food, music, and more throughout the property
